Dr. Thomas KangHello and welcome to the signature practice in the Federal Way area for Implant Dentistry and Periodontal Medicine. My vision for Puget Sound Periodontics and Implant Dentistry is to provide each of my patients the very highest level of service, quality of care and the compassion of an excellent staff at an affordable price. I am very excited to be able to provide for you a world class facility for the education, treatment and care of your oral health. As a high-schooler in Issaquah I starred in Wrestling and was a two-time King County champion. After graduation I attended the University of Washington where I participated in a number of unique research projects on campus as well as at the Friday Harbor Laboratories. During my time studying there I developed an interest in Dentistry. I was accepted at the prestigious Dugoni School of Dentistry at the University of the Pacific. Out of 3,000 applicants I was one of a hundred selected for admission to the University.

While in dental school I developed two interests that have helped to shape my career following graduation. The first was an interest in the oral-systemic links that are coming to the fore-front of both medicine and dentistry. The body is not independent of the mouth, nor is the mouth independent of the body and through continued research we are making more inroads into the relationship between periodontal disease and serious medical conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease as well as pre-term births and small for gestational age babies. My research interests have centered on these topics most specifically with the role of osteoporosis in tooth loss, how periodontal disease affects glycemic control in type II diabetics and finally how preventive care may reduce the risk for having a pre-term birth or a heart attack.

The second interest that I developed was in Implant Dentistry. If you click the “change my life” icon from the home page you will see why this fascinating field of Dentistry has become the center of our clinical practice. Dental implants are the most predictable, longest lasting and best replacements for natural teeth that we can currently offer our patients for a lifetime of dental health. Not every dentist is qualified to place dental implants, many take weekend courses and come back to their practice and start to place implants. Please be certain to screen your dentist to find out what type of additional training that they have had prior to selecting your implant dentist. Whether for single, multiple or whole mouth replacement our office and well trained staff are equipped to handle your questions and care. Through patient education and high quality care we create happy patients.

In the last stage of my education I attended the University of Pittsburgh, for a three year residency program in periodontics and fellowship in Implant Dentistry. I was one of two residents selected out of a pool of over one hundred for this position. I have been an oral presenter at multiple symposia around the country and was awarded with a special citation at the Nobel Biocare World Conference for excellence in innovation and esthetics in the advanced (residency) category.

Recently I was awarded diplomate status from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the highest level of recognition that is bestowed upon a person by this organization. It signifies absolute expertise in all facets of Implant Dentistry, I am proud to say that I am one of the youngest periodontists in the world to have received this recognition. I am a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association. I live with my wife and our two dogs in New Castle, Washington.
